Why wouldn't an optometrist not dilate my eyes?

I went to the eye dr. because I was seeing small flashers she looked in my eyes said I had a PVD not a retinal detachment, but it was mild, and there was a slight chance it could develop into an RD, but not likely. She never dilated my eyes just shine the light, I thought for serious eye conditions they dilate your eyes to get a better picture. I ask her nurse or whomever she was helping & she said sometimes she does not dilate if she can get a clear view. I still wouldn't think she could see the entire retina clearly now I am worried. I never thought about it til I got home now they are closed.
