What are some advantages and disadvantages of SLR and point-and-shoot cameras?

I want to get a really good camera but am really not sure how to choose one. Also, information about good and relatively inexpensive (under $700) SLR cameras would be great! :) Which would you recommend for someone who isn't going professional but wants some really awesome pictures?
