What does being in the military do for you?

I want to know, from people who are currently in or have been in the military, what is their purpose for joining and continuing to serve? What are the benefits in the lifestyle compared to civilian life? I'm not curious about pay, heath benefits and such. I'm more interested in emotions and comfort with your lifestyle. Are you bored with civilian life? Do you get a sense of adventure? Get deep with it please. I know you're not in it for the money. I'm trying to calm my anxiety over my decision process about enlisting.
